This charming village, the last one close to the Indo-Tibet border, has traditional Kinnauri-style wooden houses with slate roofs and small tea shops. Then we come back for Lunch at Sangla and proceed towards Kalpa. Overnight stay at Kalpa.
local sightseeing, and rest day. Kalpa is a little known town situated in the lap of the mighty 19965 feet Kinner Kailash peak, around 240kms from Shimla. Situated at an altitude of 9711 feet, Kalpa is surrounded by snowy peaks for almost the whole year. One gets a clear view of the sacred Kinner Kailash peak as well as its sister peaks. Kalpa used be to a favourite haunt of Lord Dalhousie, who used to visit this place by travelling next to the Sutluj River in those days.(Optional)
This road is also very scenic with a river on the left side and high mountains close to the road. After travelling 23 KM towards the right at top of a hill you can see Dhankar Monastery. You can climb up and visit the monastery. Before Kaza, at your right you can see the road to Pin valley.
Tabo is famous for its monastery, which is more than 1000 years old. It’s unlike any other monastery – made of mud walls – and has a beautiful temple inside. This World Heritage Site is regarded as one of the holiest by the Dalai Lama. Next in line is the 1200-year-old Dhankar monastery, on the way to Kaza. The monastery sits between many jagged peaks and has an amazing view of the Spiti River. But it is listed as one of the world’s 100 most endangered monuments. From its roof we get a bird’s-eye-view of the Dhankar village and the Pin and Spiti rivers.
On our way to Kaza, the capital of Spiti, we pass many tiny villages, Rocky Mountains, vertical rocks and cliffs. This is the biggest town in the region with an old market, and new hotels. We reach by lunch and dig into delicious cheese momos at a tiny Chinese restaurant and divine cinnamon roll at the German Bakery. The market has shops selling Tibetan souvenirs and eateries. After a quick bite, proceed towards Ki Monastery, about 14km away, the largest one in Himachal, looks like a cluster of many white homes sitting atop a conical hill. Overnight stay at Kaza.
Kibber, Langcha and Komic villages, where we go next, seems like a sprinkling of whitewashed houses on a green and brown landscape – the meadows encircled by snow-capped peaks. Each village has a board mentioning the population and Kibber has just 200 people, while Langcha’s count is 148. Langcha is one of the highest villages in Asia, located at the height of 13,943 feet and it has a huge Buddha statue and a temple. Komic village is 14,800 feet high and has just 114 people. Interestingly the population of Spiti is just 12,000 and that’s because the second son of every family has to become a monk, but this is not necessary when it’s a girl.
Overnight stay at Kaza. Hotel Snow Lion or similar at Kaza.
We get up late and relax, and walk to the market if someone wants to have more jalebis. Today, we will gonto Hikkim, post-lunch. This is the highest post office in the world. Make sure you carry some postcards to mail to your near and dear ones. It's a collector’s item and a great idea to send letters to people you love.
After mailing the letters and taking a few pictures of the village and villagers, we headed to Komic monastery (4587 m) . We then go to Langza by evening and wait for the heavens to show up. Sometimes, the weather can play a spoilsport.
We take pictures of the stars till the time we can and then leave for Kaza by 9 pm.
It is generally very cold and windy. We go back to our hotel and have a late dinner.
Today, we leave for our last place - Chandratal. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in India and most difficult to go to. Make sure you drink enough water to keep yourself safe from AMS. Take it easy, no running around.
We start at 8 am after breakfast and reach our campsite by the afternoon. We have our lunch, take some rest and leave for Chandratal lake. Here we stay in basic tents. There are no hotels here. The drive to the parking from our tents is about 3 km but a very arduous one. This is followed by a walk of about a kilometer. The walk is actually quite gentle, but the altitude makes it tough. Do not hurry, take your own time.
We spend time in the lake till evening, shoot the stars and come back. It’s really very cold here due to the wind. Make sure you carry enough warm clothes and a windproof jacket.
We will go to Chandratal lake again in the morning to shoot the sunrise. It’s a great experience to shoot in the morning. You will find an amazing play of light and shadows. We come back and leave for Manali after breakfast. It is a hell of a bumpy ride. We reach by evening, stay in our hotel, and relax.
Today, we will have a very lazy day. We get up late, sit in the lawn of our hotel with apple trees, and have breakfast. You can relax or visit the market if you want. By afternoon, we leave with our luggage, and sit in the market and roam around. We take the evening AC Volvo bus to Chandigarh, go to the airport and fly back to our destination.
We go back with memories of a lifetime and some great pictures.
During the tour, whenever possible, we spend time reviewing the pictures and providing feedback on how to get better.
Note: This is a group tour. Personal tours can be arranged on demand based on your requirement.

Sandakphu has always been known as the trekkers’ paradise and located at north west of Darjeeling town at an altitude of about 12,000ft. Sandakphu is the highest point (or peak) of West Bengal and Singalila ridge in Darjeeling district on the West Bengal – Nepal border. Many tourists who love to trek for 3 days to reach there or take a 4-wheel drive vehicle like a jeep or a Land Rover from Manebhanjan and go all the way up to Sandakphu along the steep gravel road. The motor road was full of loose stones and boulders but now almost 20 km road is made by the Dept and remaining part is little rough. Now it takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach. The distance from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu is about 32 kilometers. From Darjeeling, the distance to Sandakphu is 58 kms (26km up to Manebhanjan).
